"MASTERPIECE that without a doubt surpasses in every way each and every so called classic old horrors that we all know like Poltergeist, A nightmare on elm street etc. Insidious is truly one of only a few truly scary and masterfully made horror movies even for people like me who don't get scared by horrors! 5/5" - Antonia Koseva, Google

"I honestly had very high expectations from this film. Some even compare it to the original Conjuring(which was an alright for me), but I am disappointed with what the film offered. 2/5" - Snehil Raj, Google

"The creators of Saw and Paranormal Activity have joined forces on this silly horror – which is good for a handful of jumps and guilty giggles before it quickly reaches for the slipshod, hokey contrivances you don't expect until number 2 or 3 in the franchise. 2/5" - Cath Clarke, The Guardian

"What I loved about this movie was that it actually tries to scare you, not gross you out. The images are frightening for sure. Insidious doesn't waste any time trying to creep you out. The scares already start with the opening credits. I sure was not expecting this to be one of the scariest movies i've seen but it lives up to that. That being said, I don't think I'd have the guts to see it again! 8/10" - nicki9112, IMDb

These four reviews on the first insidious movie (and even the other ones I read) tell me that insidious had more or less an even amount of hate as it did love. A lot of people hated the cliche of a haunted house but it was also what a lot of viewers loved, ironically, especially because it had a more terrifying twist. Some reviews even said about how the end of film didn't fit the stereotypical structure of a horror film due to the insider background information on how the father had history with the supernatural that he didn't even know about. Even 13 years later, this film still receives a lot of mixed feelings but is also still known as one of the scariest movies most people have watched.

The results of my survey have given me much information, surrounding horror films, including Insidious. To my surprise, the 8 people who I got to complete the survey gave the Horror genre a 8.13 average, three of these people gave it a 10/10, whilst the rest differed between 7 to 9 and only one person gave the genre a 4. It has shown me that the horror genre is more popular than I thought even for different age groups, which I took into consideration when creating this form. Personally, I'm not surprised with the sub genre of psychological winning and getting the most votes, I am surprised that the paranormal received the lowest vote, as that is the best to me. The hilarious question of number three, gave me so many answers, which again I wasn't surprised about. From the "I don't have one" to the repeat of Scream to the comedic scary movie also combined with the sub-genre question has shown me that horror really has a broad spectrum and that people are here for it and how people love the different styles that come along with it. Adding to this point is question four. The results told me out of all the factors that make up a horror film, people love the suspense and especially the jump scares, which isn't surprising.

Moving on to the Insidious questions, when asked if the group of eight had seen the film, only one person said they hadn't. Considering the minority of the group are on the younger side of the spectrum shows how the 13 year old film still holds a certain power over of the horror genre and how even 13 years later it can still create fear and can compete with new modern day horror movies. When asked what they rate this film on a scale of 1-6, three people said four, one said five and three others said six. Once again this is interesting as the film is 13 years old but it does also include everything you would want in a horror film, like jump scares. Just for fun, I was curious to see who the favourite character is in the film and understand more what they like about it in away. Unsurprisingly, Elise the demonologist was the most favourite character in the film. I believe this is the case because shes the brave character who does her best whilst interacting with the spirits to save Dalton. She also gives the information of the spirit world and makes you feel like you're part of the story. A few other characters were also called their favourites and these were: Josh, Dalton and the demon. Once again out of curiosity I asked the group which was their favourite Insidious film. The majority of the group said the first one, one person said the second and two people said the brand new one. I believe that these films were the favourites as they followed the family story and showed how they dealt with this, whereas the third and fourth follow Elise's story.

Moving away from the Insidious questions and looking back at the horror ones, the ninth question shows the split between the group and can make me have a better understanding on either why or how people really feel about both the horror genre and the film. It was a 50/50 split for series or movie franchise. Finally, the tenth question shows me that recently people have been watching new horror films instead of older ones, which is understandable, however there is a few older ones in the mix.

Annotation of Insidious article/review:

"Insidious is considered one of the scariest movies of all time, and for good reason. The movie is horrifying from the moment the film starts to when the credits roll. Insidious raised the standard of what it means to be frightened, especially in a haunted house. The movie brought nightmares to reality through the horrifying creatures and a house where horrific acts were committed to life. In fact, the film was enough of a success to warrant four sequels (Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: Chapter 3, Insidious: The Last Key, the long-awaited Insidious: The Red Door, and the offshoot Thread: An Insidious Tale). Better yet, the very way in which they chose to tell this tale has changed the horror game forever." - Amanda Minchin, Movie web

This specific article/review covers the positive side of reviews. The elements of how Insidious is one of the scariest movies of all time is what draws the attention of the spectator. It goes on to talk about how Insidious raised the standards of horror films, which I couldn't agree more with. This is talking about the specific scariness of the film. The use of effects, lighting, costume and make up all thrown in with a haunted house, really help scare the audience and show them what other horror films don't. Backing this up is the follow up sentence of how it brought "nightmares to reality". This could have many meanings for different groups of people that watched the film, like your child being in danger or the fear of the unknown. The review even gives mention of the film's success and how it had more movies made because of it. I feel like this speaks volume on its own as it is hard for horror films to take off that like that and end up with a franchise. Finally, the last sentence of this review highlights the uniqueness of the Insidious film it shows how the hidden information and the story within a story can be incredibly effective and create so much tension.

This review, truly shows how much creativity that went into the film and how powerful it was.

Review on Research Methods:

Personally, I found the secondary information easier and more useful than the primary information. I feel like this is because it was more direct information on the film, it had more reviews to chose from that I could interpret and learn from and it also gave me statistics on how well Insidious had done. The only hard part of the secondary research was finding the reliable resources and information that made sense with other bits I had found. With the Primary information, making my questionnaire and analysing the article, it was more fun than the secondary because it felt more personal and I got to ask my own questions on the film and interpret the deeper meaning behind a review. However, the primary research was much harder as I didn't have all the information in front of me, I had to think of my own questions based round the film (which was difficult as I didn't know who had seen the film and who hadn't) and I had to hope that the information I was getting was reliable. Further more, I found the qualitative research more interesting and useful than the quantitative research as it was mainly people's opinion's on the film. It was useful as it told me how people had a love or hate for it and what led to it becoming a franchise. The statistics were helpful but just a lot less interesting and just gave ,e the straight fact without a debate, like the reviews.
