Principles of Graphic Design:
Graphic design plays a critical role in brand building.
1. Balance. Balance lends stability and structure to an overall design. It can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical balance is where the weight is evenly divided on either side of the design. Where as asymmetrical balance uses, scales, contrast and colour to achieve the flow in design.
2. Proximity. Proximity helps create a relationship between similar or related elements. They should be visually connected through colour and font and size.
3. Alignment. Alignment plays a key role in creating a seamless visual connection with the design elements. It creates order though images, shapes and blocks of text by taking out the unorganised manner.
4. Visual hierarchy. Visual hierarchy is formed when extra visual weight is given to the most important element or message in the design. it can be done by using brighter/contrasting colours, making it larger and more detail.
5. Repetition. Repetition is a fundamental design element, especially when it comes to branding. It creates rhythm and strengthens to the overall design. Tying everything together with consistent elements, making the brand recognisable.
6. Contrast. Contrast happens when there is two opposing design elements. it guides the viewers attention to the key elements.
7. Colour. Colour shows the overall mood of the design. the colours you pick represent your brand and it's tonality. Colour palettes can be used to create contrast or even to compliment over elements.
8. Negative Space. Negative space means the area between or around the elements. It can create a shape and highlight the important components of the design.
9. Typography. Typography is a key pillar in design and it can speak volume about a brand or design.
10. Rules. Rules can be broken in design. Whatever it is that you choose to communicate should not be compromised.
