Creative Media, Production and Technology
Planning and Production, Part One:
For our advert we are going to use a Halloween based snack and base it around trick or treating. We decided that we are going to use Caitlin's house for our location and show that Haribo's are for everyone through the use of props (masks, costume, ect) and the different ages of the characters. In the actual advert we are going to use Caitlin's little brother as the trick or treat-er who is dressed in fancy dress. Oliver will open the door and give Billy a pack of Haribo's Billy will jump for joy and Oliver will be visibly confused. He will then go close the door and go into the kitchen, where he open's a pack of Haribo and tries them. After he eats one, he turns into a monster and chases Billy down the street. He then proceeds to give him an extra bag of Haribo. Just after the logo appears and the slogan, "Haribooo's are for everyone. Just like Halloween!"
We have chosen these trailers as our inspiration due to the fact that they all included trick or treating and the product is presented at the door. We found it interesting that in the two Haribo adverts they are also doing trick or treating, considering we didn't know this when we picked Haribo's as our branded snack. In the Haribo adverts it shows how even adults love the sweets and how they will do anything for it. This helped us with our idea of the adult trying the sweet and turning into the monster to emphasise that the sweet is for everyone. The m&m's as well as the other's inspired us to have a bit more of a comedic spin on it and have Oliver chase Billy to show that bit of horror and add a laugh to it.

Logo editing:
For my logo I decided to keep it child friendly and have everything included cartoons just like the Haribo logo and the golden bear. I decided it would be best to focus on picking a background first. Once I chose to have a haunted house as the background, I changed the colour settings to make it purple and fit with the theme of night that we plan to use when recording. I then decided to add the Haribo logo and the bear. So, keeping it simple, I added devil horns to the "H" and a devil's tail to the "O". Moving over to the bear I gave him a black cape to show him dressing up as well and to really go though with the statement that Halloween is for everyone just like Haribo's.
The logo was looking fine up to this point but still felt a little plain. So I added some pumpkins on the ground around the bottom of the house. To further the spooky touch I put some zombie hands coming out of the ground and a skull. The top also felt bare still so I added a black cat on a broom and two ghosts flying about. The background I chose already had some bats in the air which really helped the image come together. Finally I added the catchphrase at the top and bottom of the logo, in the same Haribo red. The logo is going to appear at the end of my advert for a few seconds.
Planning and Production, Part Two:

Location images:

As a part of the Production process we need to think of location, props and risks that may come with filming. (The images above show these factors) Our props were a mixture of costume, product and item, I had to buy a few things for the advert (mask and product). Caitlin also provided a costume and a bucket for her brother. With picking a location, we had to decide how real we wanted our advert to look, which house was easiest and available for us to use and how getting there would affect filming time . We decide that Caitlin's house was the best for all these aspects and made the most sense as Caitlin's little brother, Billy, was going to be in our piece. However, doing the advert at Caitlin's house also came with its risk. Oliver was most at risk to injury due to him running in the dark, falling about in the kitchen and running in the alley way. We planned to avoid injury by taking these scenes slow and aiming to take little to none retakes on these specific scenes to avoid any harm to Oliver. Caitlin's Brother, Billy was also at risk of injury, in his scene where he runs from Oliver. Once again, we aimed to avoid too many retakes and took them slow. We even had the risk of the camera breaking during all of the scenes, just us accidentally dropping it or the tripod not being set up properly would have caused damage. The only way could really prevent this was by taking it slow and making sure all equipment was set up properly and securely.
Haribo Halloween Advert:
Evaluate:
For our Halloween advert we wanted to play about with the original style of a Halloween Haribo advert and use trick or treating but with a spin. Our plan was to make it a bit more scary and funny and really show that Halloween and Haribo's are for everyone. We planned this by gathering research through watching Halloween based treats adverts and seeing how they were portrayed. We then looked at our treat adverts and decided that playing a spin on this idea was going to be our best option. So we decided then what the extra was going to be and this was to have Oliver turn into a monster and chase Billy and give him more sweets. I created my storyboard, decided a location and filled out the risk assessment and prop form.
When we began recording we faced some challenges with whether we were going to use the back garden or the front. We decided the back as it was most accessible and had the least risks. Following this we also faced some issues with the microphone as it didn't pick up on any of the conversations, I solved this by voice recording them and adding them in when editing.
Overall, I am happy with my finished work. I really like how well it all goes together and how it fits the theme of Halloween and portrays what the product is about. I feel like I did the Foley really well and the logo came out better than I could have hoped. I feel like the use of the canted angle was really effective and added a sense of unease. I also feel as if the transformation scene was effective due to the smooth cut and the black outs.
However, I could have improved my piece by creating more Foley for the transformation scene and the chase scene. I could have also improved by using a wider range of camera angles like a high angle or even a low angle to add a bit more suspense. If I had more time, I would have taken more shots (but still focusing on the risk assessment by keeping the number low) to have a wider range of footage to chose from and not have to use black outs where they didn't align properly. I would have also spent more time on the Hair, make up and costume, if given longer as that felt very rushed and store bought instead of "transformation into a monster".
I realised that all the skills I have learnt through this term and the ones I already had were put to a test during this production. Especially, collaboration and confidence. I was able to feel as if I could take charge in my own way but also not step on the toes of other people, when they had their own ideas. I feel like I also really developed my skill of communication through this task and was able to work in a team that had a bunch of different ideas. Even furthering this, I really felt like my time management skills and resilience were put to a test as we were feeling outside of college and at night so we had an even smaller time frame to work with and no spaces for retakes on another day.
Moving over, I have received positive feedback from the people that I have shown my advert to outside of college yet from the people inside of college they gave me helpful criticism which I took into consideration and re-edited my piece with this help. My audience did like my piece and thought it was thought out well and funny just like we had hoped for.
Finally, I feel like this project will help me in future ones as I now I have a better idea of my way round premier pro, I got to really experiment with Photoshop and I got to work outside of college and college hours. My main learning points from this project is that a schedule is key and that sticking with a plan instead of making it up as you go is so much easier and better for many reasons.
